Despite fifty from Virat Kohli and Sharul Thakur, and England dropping four catches, India collapsed to 127-7 and lost their last three wickets in four balls but reduced England to 6-2 Rory Burns fell for five and Haseeb nought both to Jasprit Bumrah.

Indian top order did not have the answer for England attack in helpful conditions, Captain Kohli batted with control and class, by shuffling across his stumps played some wonderful off-drives, surviving being dropped at first sip Root off Woakes on 22. Then Thakur, lofted Overton over long-off for six, Woakes suffered the same fate from a hack to cow corner and Robinson was crunched over deep square leg. However, Thakur was dropped by Bairstow when he followed a Robinson short ball on 43, going on complete his second fastest half-century by an Indian batsman in Test cricket. His fisty stand with Umesh came up in only 6.4 overs.

Root and David Malan seemed to have weathered the storm, but captain Joe Root fell as Umesh hurried a nip-backer between the England Captain’s bat and pad  and trimmed the balls.
