Portugal beat France 1-0
Eder 109’
Portugal managed to beat hosts France in the Euro 2016 final and claim their first major tournament triumph after the early loss of Captain Cristiano Ronaldo, thanks to substitute Eder’s extra-time winning goal at the Stade de France in Paris.
Ronaldo was carried off on a stretcher in the 25th minute, eight minutes after injuring his knee in a clash with France’s Dimitri Payet.
France could not capitalise on Ronaldo’s absence, although they almost won it in the 91st minute when substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac turned hit the inside of the post. Raphael Guerreiro hit the bar with a free-kick for Portugal after 108 minutes, but immediately they were ahead as Eder fired a low, 25-yard drive past keeper Hugo Lloris. France had 56 per cent possession and 7 shots on target and 9 corners but could not find a goal.
