Amal Clooney praises George for his help in raising her profile

Amal Cloooney

Amal Clooney is a specialist in Human Rights.  At 37 this Lebanese barrister married one of the most famous Hollywood actors and has just been on NBC news discussing human rights issues in The Maldives.  She confirms it is good that her cause now attracts a higher level of interest due to her beloved husband’s fame and regards democracy as being “dead” in The Maldives.

Amal has been lobbying to impose sanctions on The Maldives for either putting opposition leaders behind bars or suing them through the courts.

She represents ex president Mohamed Nasheed who is in prison for 13 years and has served six months of his sentence. An alledgedly corrupt judge ordered his arrest in 2012.  Amal has said “I thought to myself, the world needs more Nasheeds” after studying his particular case.

There is news that he has now had his sentence reduced to house arrest but apparently this is up in the air now and his original sentence re-imposed after a bout of ill health. He ended 30 years of autocracy in 2008 ruling the Maldives. After losing his place as leader, being replaced by Yameen Abdul Gayoom, half brother of the Maldives’ former autocratic ruler.
