David Tennant has made an absolute surprise appearance in Jodie Whittaker’s final Doctor Who story. The BBC has confirmed Tennant, who previously played the role between 2005 and 2010, has officially returned for three episodes to be aired from November next year as the 14th Doctor, in the sci-fi drama’s 60th anniversary. After three 60th anniversary specials in 2023, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will take over from David Tennant as the 15th Doctor.

Tennant who returned after over a decade said: “You move on from it with a whole mixture of emotions, and one of the sadness and regret. So to be able to revisit that and to get another shot, was a total joy from start to finish. Doctor Who runs through my life, as if through a stick of rock really. I went to get the fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s autograph in Glasgow, John Menzies ”.

Whittaker’s final story shown in Sunday had characters from the Doctor’s past. The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth doctors played by Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and Paul McGann all made brief appearances, including 97-year-old William Russell who played one of the companions of the first Doctor, William Hartnell, and former companions Ace, Tegan and Jo played by Sophie Aldred, Janet Fielding, and Katy Manning.
