Dr Strange – a new take on action drama courtesy of Marvel comics

Benedict Cumberbatch seems to have grown up and in the role of Dr Strange he has a dynamism and energy, intellect and presence which fills the role superbly. It is interesting that he plays an arrogant and talented neurosurgeon with a taste for fast cars which leads to the story unfolding.  Rachel McAdams is his admiring sidekick in the operating theatre and otherwise.  Special effects particularly using rings of sparking flames abound and as Dr Strange goes on a mission to save his health (I won’t say why) he meets some scintillatingly different characters including The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who is a Celtic Mystic with supernatural powers some of which you may have heard of such as Astral Projection or Planing – out of body experiences where the mind and soul leaves the body for a while to take an overall look at city or landscapes and then returns to the body afterwards.  At first the arrogant Dr Strange is rejected and has to then plead to get them to take him on – this part of the plot takes place in the mountains of Nepal. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years a slave) is also in the story and the entertainment element of the saga means that it is suitable for all ages.  Dr Strange has to fight to learn the rare dogma that they teach there and there is plenty of adventure so if you like this kind of drama with a strong twist of fantasy even though it doesn’t part entirely with reality go and see it!

Enjoy
