Sebastain Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari sandwiched Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, and all three collided in the rain before turn One, with the latter two coming together again. Sebastian Vettel was forced to withdraw which handed Mercedes driver the initiative. Fernando Alonso also was caught up in the chaos and the Spaniard was forced to retire.

Lewis Hamilton, who started fifth after struggling in qualifying, capitalised on this situation to win the Singapore Grand Prix and extended his Formula One world championship lead to 28 points.

Hamilton dodged the chaos on the run to the first corner and went into lead ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the second crash of the race.

Hamilton fastest laps on a race which started wet and was dry for almost half its distance, featuring three safety cars, and ran only 58 of its scheduled 61 laps because of the two-hour time limit.
