Smartphone shipments in India crossed over 40 million for the first time in Q3 2017, a 23 per cent annual growth, compared to China’s shipment of 110 million per quarter. India has overtaken US on sales with only China ahead of it.

India’s population is 1.3 billion while the US is 320 million. Earlier this year, Samsung and Chinese brands squeezed India’s phone companies from the top seller list and they continue to lead the field today.

According to Canalys, Samsung remains to with 9.4 million shipments in Q2, up 30 per cent , but Xiaomi seems to overtake tis oom by over 290 per cent year-on-year to reach 9. 2million units.

Chinese brands Vivo, Oppo and Lenovo occupies the top five while Apple is lagging behind. The high price of the iPhone make it difficult to gain wide mainstream adoption despite the introduction of lower-priced devices and discounts for older models.

Cheap and affordable handsets and the proliferation of fourth generation or $G services have helped India to overtake US, as there are over 100 mobile device brands sold in India as growth continues with low smartphone penetration and the explosion of the long term evolution 4G .
