A major police hunt was triggered today for raiders who stole gems and watches worth up to £ 3m after tunnelling into a jeweller’s in a building owned by Lord Sugar.

Over the week end the thieves drilled through a ground-floor wall of the George Attenborough and Son Jeweller’s in Fleet Street from a neighbouring bookmakers as thousands of runners jogged past.  The burglars are thought to have first gained entry to a William Hill betting shop by drilling a hole at the rear of the building and drilled a second hole into a wall between the bookmakers and the jewellery store next door.

The building was bought for £4.3m by Lord Sugar Amsprop company in December 2017. The raid was similar to the Hatton Garden Deposit company heist in April 2015, when a gang of ageing robbers tunnelled into the vaults during the Easter bank holiday weekend.

A Scotland Yard statement said: “Police were called shortly before 2 am on Monday to a report of a burglary at a jewellers in Fleet Street. A quantity of jewellery was stolen. An investigation has been launched led by detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad.”
