England completes the highest run chase in their Test history  378-3, and beat India by 7 wickets. England’s win would mean the rearranged Test series ends in a 2-2 draw.

Root reaches 28th Test ton off 136 balls, and Bairstow brings up his 12th Test ton and fourth in five innings. Joe Root before this summer had batted 37 times  in the fourth innings of a Test and averaged 32, with no centuries.  This summer he has got 115 not out at Lord’s, three at Nottingham, 87 not out at Headingly and 142 not out here. Root belted Shardul Thakur back over his head for four then reverse-scooped for six.

Bairstow becomes the first England player to hit two centuries in the same Test since Andrew Strauss against India at Chennai in 2008.

England’s next  series is with South Africa  in August, while three T20s against India led by captain Jos Bulter  starting Thursday.

Jasprit Bumrah captaining India in place of the Covid-hit Rohit Sharma. India made a tactical error in omitting spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and carelessfuly threw away a dominant position when they were batting in their second innings, and were passive as England overwhelmed them in the run chase. They were later fined 40 per cent of their match fee and penalised two ICC World Test Championship points for a slow over-rate.

England captain Ben Stokes said “ When you have got real clarity in what you want to achieve as a team and how you want to play it makes things lot easier. We knew we were always going to go out and try and chase that down”.

Jonny Bairstow said “ It is really special to knock off 378 with just three down. It is something we’ll never forget”.

Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah said “ Test cricket is never easy. If you have had three good days, you’ve still got to come back and put in good performances. We had three good days and we were a little short with the bat and we let the opposition in”.
