Year of the Sheep : Happy Chinese New Year

 

c new yearred packetschineseChinese all over the world are celebrating the Chinese New Year, Year of the Sheep with dramatic firework  display in Beijing. In China, 3bn passenger trips will be made by car, Train and plane over the 40day period, by people are travelling home in what is considered the world’s biggest annual human migration.

It is a public holiday in many places with ethnic Chinese populations such as Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. The festival is known as Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in South Korea, and is traditionally a time to be with family. In a speech at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping extended Lunar New Year greetings to Chinese people everywhere.

Traditionally, Red envelopes or red packets (Cantonese: lai sze or lai see) (利是, 利市 or 利事; Pinyib: lìshì); (Mandarin: ‘hóngbāo’ (红包); Hokkien: ‘ang pow’ (POJ: âng-pau); Haka: ‘fung bao’); are passed out during the Chinese New Year’s celebrations, from married couples or the elderly to unmarried juniors and also for adults or young couples to give red packets to children. Small gifts (usually food or sweets) are also exchanged between friends or relatives (of different households) during Chinese New Year. Gifts are usually brought when visiting friends or relatives at their homes.
